A crew traveling to Antarctica to support scientific research recently spotted an unexpected visitor from the deep. Olivia Hickey has been documenting her journey south to the ice-covered Antarctica continent as she embarks on a six-month gig as a FTO (field training officer) at Davis Station. From her vessel, Hickey snapped rare photos of what might be a giant squid—a species of squid that lives deep underwater and can grow to be over 30 feet long.

“Yesterday we had a visitor from the deep!” Hickey wrote in her Instagram post sharing the photos. “We had just got to the edge of the sea ice and paused to put the ship into 4WD and this giant squid came up from below.”
