Two armed men, a father and his adult son, took two U.S. Forest Service employees hostage on Thursday while the employees were on duty in northern California’s largest national forest. The men brought the hostages into a camper trailer at Gumboot Campground, tied them up, held them at gunpoint, and told authorities they wanted to speak with the FBI.

The suspects, Joseph and Phoenix Henrichsen, released the hostages after about 12 hours. Eventually, the pair surrendered and are now in custody awaiting charges for kidnapping.

“I am grateful beyond words that both of our Forest Service employees are home safe,” wrote Tom Schultz, the U.S. Forest Service Chief, in a Facebook post. “On July 16, the two were taken hostage while doing field work on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. By the early morning of July 17, both were safe. This outcome is a testament to the skill and professionalism of our Forest Service law enforcement officers, the FBI, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, and every first responder who answered the call.”
