“In 2005, Hurricane Rita plowed right over the top of us. We were living in a subdivision at the time and lost power and potable water for a couple of weeks. That’s when I realized how vulnerable our public utilities are…”
This article is part of a new series called Interviewing Preppers. The idea is to shed some light on the different styles of prepping. Just as no two people would define success the same way, no two preppers would define their method of prepping the same way. In each interview, I ask the spotlighted prepper seven questions regarding their journey, goals, and how they’re connected to the preparedness community.
- Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hello there! My name is Jody. My wife Adrienne and I launched Emergency Water Well (emergencywaterwell.com) out of our garage in 2015 in Tomball, Texas just north of Houston. It started out as a hobby but quickly grew into the largest manufacturer and distributor of DIY water well kits in North America (and possibly the world). We outgrew our garage and now operate out of a standalone shop in Conroe, Texas.
- What are the top five preparedness supplies you usually have with you in some way or another?
That’s a good question. Each person’s list is dependent on their skills and location. I grew up in Alaska where my top five would be different than here in Texas. For starters, in Alaska, you’re not on the top of food chain. Up there you also have to worry about cold, snow and darkness and it Texas its heat, crowds and poisonous critters. You probably can’t go wrong with these five items: 1) .22 rifle (with plenty of ammo) and a strong fixed blade knife, 2) means to start a fire, 3) good set of wool clothes and rain gear, 4) ample amount of dehydrated food (i.e. beans, rice or prepackaged food), 5) a clean water source (from a well, storage, filter, etc.)
- Tell us about one event in your life that has played a role in you developing DIY water well kits for preppers.
In 2005, Hurricane Rita plowed right over the top of us. We were living in a subdivision at the time and lost power and potable water for a couple of weeks. That’s when I realized how vulnerable our public utilities are. We spent the next several years (and dozens of wells) experimenting with different drilling techniques until we developed our current system. When the next two hurricanes ripped through (Ike and Harvey) we were prepared. Still had to worry about other survival issues, but access to water wasn’t one of them.
- Do you personally have a preparedness goal you are currently working on?
Our preparedness goal is now focused on helping others. No one person (or family) can be totally prepared for all scenarios, however, by combining efforts with others you can greatly increase your chance of survival. We spend a lot of time teaching others how to drill shallow water wells and in exchange, we build strong allies. Many of our neighbors and friends now have the tools and knowledge needed to drill a well in just a few hours.
- Do you store drinking water for emergencies or do you just depend on well water? If you do store water, how much do you store and how often do you rotate it?
We still store a couple of hundred gallons of water in 2.5 gallon glass containers but this is less important now that we have several water wells at our disposal. In our opinion, it’s more practical to have our water well auger in your attic than it is tons of water. If you know how to use it (and you live in a clay or sandy area) then your auger can help supply an endless amount of water.
- Who would benefit from a DIY water well kit? Does it work in most urban and rural areas?
Our DIY water well kits are perfect for those who live in clay or sandy areas. With a little bit of knowledge (from our youtube videos) and the right tools, you can literally drill a fully functioning water well in just a few hours. Our patented system works just as well in the middle of a city as it does in the middle of the woods. It requires no electricity, running water or power tools so can be installed quietly and secretly.

- What’s the most popular water well kit you sell? What makes it so popular?
Emergency Water Well deployed nearly 1,000 well kits over the last few years with sales continuing to climb due to the success of our current customers. Our kits are also gaining traction in Africa, South America and Asia where lack of clean water is a widespread and heartbreaking problem. For those in North America, our Large Bore Kit is preferred as it provides the most versatile well. It can accommodate our hand-pump as well as a submersible pump, or shallow water jet pump. Some of our customers even use their wells to water their yard and fill up their pond.
