A Christmas Fly Rod for Sandy

Do you know who typically has less fly rods in their own personal stash than you'd ever expect?  Fly rod builders.  No joke.  So when Sandy Nelson of Sandy's Custom Fly Rods sent me a message on Instagram of his gift to himself for Christmas, I figured it was certainly deserving of a share.  

And, the Livingston Rod Company Western Glass 865 is very high on my own personal "Must Have" list, but if choosing, I'd want it in the dark translucent brown finish.

Sandy wrote...  "At long last and by way of a Christmas present to myself, the best long glass rod on the market has finally made it to my quiver with Dusty Smith of Livingston Rod Co.'s quintessential Western Glass 865 in black finish.

I decided to use a copper silk wrap, select Struble Mfg. coral agate, and a big leaf maple insert from Ray Lee that I’ve been keeping for something special.  I also used a Snake Brand solid smoked nickel silver reel seat with matching smoked Snake Brand guides.

Clean and sexy and kind of a tribute to Dusty's style too.  Roll on the start of the fishing season."
