Woman Went Into Labor On Delta Flight And Delivered Baby On The Plane

Well, here is a story you don’t hear every day. I frequently write about rowdy passengers or plane disturbances, but this is a new one for me. One woman gave passengers, and I am sure herself, the shock of a lifetime when she began to go into labor while on her Delta flight. Even more surprising is that she ended up delivering her baby on the plane.

Now I see why airlines request approval from medical professionals for pregnant women after a certain time. I think labor can be stressful enough in a planned environment. I cannot imagine the strength of this woman and those who supported her to deliver a baby unexpectedly on a plane.

Nevertheless, People Magazine shared that “A woman went into labor on a Delta Air Lines flight on Friday.” Fortunately for her, “passengers stepped in to help deliver the baby while the plane was still in mid-air.”

The woman, named Ashley, was leaving Atlanta and on her way to Portland when she noticed her labor beginning. Despite the plane making an emergency landing, it was still not quick enough. According to the outlet, Ashley delivered her baby on the plane about 30 minutes before they were able to land.

Passengers Assisted In Delivering The Baby On The Plane

Honestly, this event was so incredible that it sounds like a scene out of a movie. Once Ashley realized she was heading into active labor, the flight crew knew they needed to assist. A flight attendant went over the intercom and asked if there were any medical personnel on board. If there were, the flight crew would inform them to ring their service bell.

Fortunately for Ashley, Tina Fritz and Carrin Powell — two EMTs— were on board returning from their vacation. When speaking with KOIN, Fritz shared her interaction with the flight attendant. “The steward came up to us, and he goes, ‘Hey, we have a lady up front who thinks she’s going into labor,” Fritz shared. “Contractions are about three minutes apart. Can you guys check her out?”

Naturally, the duo obliged. They managed to help deliver the baby on the plane with limited resources. People Magazine shared that Fritz and her friend “borrowed blankets from passengers and got the flight attendant to cut off his shoelace to use as a tourniquet to restrict Ashley’s blood flow to start an IV.”

Incredibly, it all worked out well, and Ashley was able to deliver her baby with three really good pushes. Fritz shared that “Mom was a rock star” and “did so good.” The entire plane cheered, and both mom and baby landed in stable condition.
