Two hikers feared for their lives when they encountered two grizzly bears chasing each other on and around a trail in Montana’s Glacier National Park. Mason Van Zeeland shared footage from the day on Instagram, and it went viral.
Van Zeeland and his hiking partner, Alyssa Olsen, had their bear spray ready, and they mostly remained calm. He says they did some things right, some things wrong, and were overall just grateful that the bears were more interested in each other than they were in hikers.

“This could’ve ended very differently,” he wrote in his post. “[. . .] We weren’t perfect in the moment, and situations happen fast. Safety should always come first. ALWAYS carry bear spray in grizzly country, stay aware, keep distance, make noise on trail, these animals are dangerous.”
