WATCH: 100+ Dolphins Surround Man While Foil Surfing

A British Columbia man had an “insane” encounter a couple of months ago when 100 or more dolphins surrounded him as he was foil surfing on a Hydroflyer. The man was off the coast of Vancouver, Canada in Howe Sound when he noticed “something in the water.” That “something” was actually a whole lot of somethings—a huge pod of dolphins.

Jerry McArthur and a friend were in awe, but they tried to steer their Hydroflyers away from the pod. The dolphins had other plans, though. The curious animals surrounded McArthur, even swimming directly beneath him. A video of McArthur and the dolphins went viral.

Local news reporter Alanna Kelly shared the video to her TikTok profile in late February, and it got over 8 million views. Kelly describes a Hydroflyer as “a cross between a jet ski and an electric foil (e-foil) surfboard, propelled by a 7.5-horsepower motor.”

The unique board allows the rider to rise over three feet into the air, which gave McArthur a unique vantage point on the 100+ dolphins that wanted to hang out with him that day in Howe Sound. He says the animals hung around him and his friend for about 20 minutes.

‘Holy crap’: B.C. man has epic encounter with 100+
🐬
A man was riding the waves in Howe Sound recently when he noticed more than 100 dolphins following him. Jerry McArthur and his friend Sheldon rode from Porteau Cove Provincial Park to Horseshoe Bay on Feb. 24 to film for his company. The Pemberton man, who invented the Hydroflyer, was excited about a storm and big waves but when they arrived the water was flat. “We were pretty disappointed and we thought, ‘Hey, we’ll just go out in the water anyways,'” he told Glacier Media. The Hydroflyer is a cross between a jet ski and an electric foil (e-foil) surfboard, propelled by a 7.5-horsepower motor. A submerged wing mounted to the craft’s bottom allows it to rise more than three feet into the air as it approaches a top speed of 50 km/h. “The easiest way to think of it is like an underwater airplane wing, basically,” said McArthur. He was a couple hundred feet from the coastline in Howe Sound near Porteau Cove when something in the water caught his attention. “As we were kind of going out, we saw something out in the water. We didn’t really know what it was,” he said. To his surprise, they were foiling right in a big pod of dolphins. #dolphins #vancouver #bc #britishcolumbia #canada #hydrofoiling #howesound #westcoast #foiling @Squamish Chief @The Hydroflyer – Electric PWC @Pique Newsmagazine
