A rare white lion at Guangzhou Zoo has reportedly died at age 17. The lion, Hang Hang, was internet famous for his odd hairstyle—a mullet with fringe-style bangs. Zoo staff repeatedly denied having any hand in styling Hang Hang’s hair, saying instead that the zoo’s location in southeastern China is humid, and that Hang Hang had a habit of grooming his mane so that it would stick straight down in front.

At this time, no information is available about how the animal died, but 17 is toward the end of a lion’s lifespan in captivity (they live 10-14 years in the wild). Daily News reports that the zoo is planning a bronze statue in honor of its most famous inhabitant.
