Raccoon Loses Her Babies

I have to say, as someone who writes a lot of wildlife stories, this is one of my favorites. It is not often that nature is kind enough to give second chances, but in the case of this raccoon, she got lucky. A mother raccoon was separated from her babies.
Cowyboy State Daily shared that a Cheyenne resident reported finding four baby raccoons, also known as kits, hiding in his boat. Chris Saunders, “owner and operator of the Cheyenne-based 307 Pest critter-catching company,” arrived to take the kits.
After a successful capture, he transported the baby raccoons to Patricia Wyer’s wildlife rescue center. That center is called Broken Bandit Wildlife Center, east of Cheyenne. At the time of the rescue, there was no sign of the mother. Therefore, rescuers assumed that the kits had lost their mother and she was most likely dead. Little did they know that was far from the truth.
Raccoon Reunion Is The Sweetest Story Of 2025
A few short days after the babies were rescued, Saunders received another call from the homeowner. Now, he was very upset because something “had pulled his vehicle apart.” When detailing the impact of the destruction, Saunders told the outlet, “The windshield wipers, windshield trim, and pretty much all the plastic and rubber that you could find around the cab of the pickup had been destroyed.”
The culprit of the destruction was soon discovered and captured – a large female raccoon. At first, no one assumed that this female raccoon had any connection to the kits rescued days prior. However, after some time, Saunders and Wyer began to put the pieces together.
The female raccoon was terrified and infuriated at losing her babies. The rescuers assumed she was “probably trying to get inside the cab of the pickup to try looking for her babies.” Their assumption was proved correct after the mother’s cage was placed next to the cage with the kits.
After a brief moment of hesitation, recognition kicked in. “There was some coooing, and little chirps coming from the cages,” Wyer said, “because the babies realized who it was.” This raccoon reunion was incredibly rare and super sweet.
The entire family stayed at Broken Bandit until the babies were old enough to forage. From there, the entire family was released back into the wild. When speaking to the outlet, Wyer explained how special this moment truly was. “It’s so rare to see an entire raccoon family get a second chance,” she explained. “It seems like we never, ever get to see the mom (raccoon) again, so this was a pretty special one.”
