A sea lion that had suffered a massive wound due to a shark attack is getting a second shot at life. After being rescued and cared for, this lucky girl is finally being released back into the ocean thanks to SeaWorld San Diego.

Sea Lion Was Rescued After Devastating Shark Attack

People Magazine shared the exclusive story about how a female sea lion was rescued after a devastating shark attack. The outlet shared that the poor creature was found in a tide pool. Those who noticed the injured animal called SeaWorld San Diego’s animal resuce hotline for assistance.

During the call, they reported that the sea lion had a “large wound on her neck.” Additionally the poor thing appeared lethargic and “had poor motor skills.” The rescue organization responded to the call immediately. Upon arriving to the scene they confirmed what the callers had identified and quickly brought her back to the SeaWorld Rescue Center.

When speaking to People Magazine, a SeaWorld spokesperson shared what they found when evaluating the sea lion. “We immediatley noticed mobility challenges and were concerned there could be underlying issues or pain,” they admitted. In order to further understand the extent of the animal’s wounds the team performed X-rays and took blood samples. They also conducted various veterinary exams, all while treating the shark bite wound.

SeaWorld San Diego Released The Sea Lion Back Into The Ocean

Despite the detailed treatment she was recieving, the sea lion was not responding or moving as much as the rescue team would have hoped. For awhile, they were concerned about her ability to recover. However, the team never gave up and eventually the sea lion began to respond to treatment.

Once she started to move and exhibit “normal sea lion behaviors again” the rescue team at SeaWorld San Diego knew they had turned a corner. But, treating the sea lion for the shark attack wound was just half the battle. Now that she was feeling better, it was time to get her back in the water.

Releaseing her back to the ocean was always the organization’s plan. According to their website, the organization shares that it is always their mission to ” rescue and help animals in need of care, always with the goal of rehabilitating them and returning them to the wild.”

Hopefully this sea lion will have more luck at her second shot at life.
