People Are Outraged After Vandals Cover Yosemite National Park With Graffiti

Vandalism is never the right choice. No matter where it happens, it is disruptive and disrespectful. However, there is something particularly odious about vandalism at a national park. National parks, which are supposed to be treasured and protected, are not meant to be vandalized. Apparently, these individuals didn’t get the message as they went around and covered Yosemite National Park in graffiti. Now people are outraged and demanding justice.

Vandals decided to do a little more than sightseeing when visiting Yosemite National Park. The NY Post reports that the unknown individuals sparked outrage online after “tagging a boulder and other items” in the park with “Yetti graffiti.”

Many saw the act as disgraceful and couldn’t believe that someone would choose to deface the park in such a way. Also, a Reddit post shared some photos of the trail that was affected by the vandals. In those photos, you can clearly see the word “Yetti” written in graffiti across a boulder. Additionally, the word was plastered across an informational sign and on a door.

The post claims that the damage was inflicted along the Bridalveil Fall Trail. This act of vandalism surprised many, as it had been a long time since Yosemite National Park dealt with graffiti. The NY Post shared that the last incident occurred in May of 2022 along the Yosemite Falls Trail.

The Internet Reacts

Naturally, no one is responding well to the news of one of the national parks being vandalized. As I previously stated, the majority of people see these parks as treasures that should be protected. Here were some of the comments left on the Reddit thread regarding the issue of graffiti in Yosemite National Park.

  • “I’ll never understand what people get out of it, but unfortunately posting about it is probably giving them exactly what they want.”
  • “Should be forced to spend time cleaning trash/vandalism at the park. That way they learn respect for shared natural spaces and repay the debt of the harm they caused. Time in jail won’t change this behavior. Time in nature might.”
  • “I’ll never understand what possesses people to destroy what is irreplaceable and precious.”
  • “WTF is wrong with people. It could easily cost more than $1000 to fix all of these (lots of labor), which would make it felony vandalism. Punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.”
