I would have imagined somewhere warm with sand and a beach. I don’t know why, but I always feel like that is most people’s idea of an international destination. However, the travel pros recommended somewhere a little different. Any guesses?

If you guessed Ireland, congratulations, you are correct! Travel + Leisure spoke with six separate travel pros, and they all unanimously agreed on this destination. Not only did they agree it was a great fit for first-time international travel, but they also shared similar reasons for it.

One of the many benefits is that there is no language barrier for American travelers. Language barriers often make people a bit more anxious about their stay. Additionally, long flight times are another common drawback. However, from the East Coast, it is typically only a six to eight-hour flight.

Furthermore, the travel pros commented on how welcoming the culture is.

What The Experts Had To Say For First-Time International Travelers

Bryan Lewis, one of the travel pros and founder and CEO of Tenon Tours, had this to say about Ireland. “For U.S.-based travelers taking their first international trip, Ireland is often one of the best places to start.” With more than 25 years of industry experience, he is qualified to discuss the best places to visit, and he swears Ireland is one of them.

“The shared language, welcoming culture, and relatively short flight times from the East Coast make it feel accessible, while still offering a distinctly different sense of place.” If you have successfully been convinced to pack a bag and head off to Ireland, many of the experts also agree on where to start.

Dublin seems to be the unanimously agreed-upon starting point for first-time international travelers. Lewis commented on this aspect of the trip planning as well. He shared, “Dublin is an ideal starting point, offering walkable neighborhoods, historic sites, and a lively food and pub scene.”
