Martin Haseman has cracked the code on living rent-free on public land, and he’s not gatekeeping his secrets. Haseman lives full time on the Tennessee River, boondocking in his tiny houseboat, and a recent YouTube video highlighting his unique lifestyle has reached over a million people.

In an interview with Kirsten Dirksen about his current life and the journey he took to arrive there, Haseman says he transitioned from his stable but “boring” life working at a bank into full-time boondocking after his parents passed away.

Haseman describes that it took him quite a while to figure out how to live rent free. He first tried living out of a sailboat. Next, he tried RV life. His DIY houseboat anchored in different spots along the Tennessee River has been the solution, though. He says he can anchor along the river without paying a fee, but he does have to move; he can’t stay in the same spot for too long without breaking laws.
