“Can you spot the black witch moth in this photo?” asks the CREW Land & Water Trust in a Facebook post, sharing a photo of a cabbage palm tree. There’s also a giant moth there, but you might not even notice if you didn’t know to look for it.
“Black witch moths (Ascalapha odorata) are large, mottled moths with a wingspan of up to ~9 in.,” the organization adds in its post. “While these migratory moths spend half the year in the southern US and Brazil and the other half as far north as Canada to breed, they can be seen year-round at all 4 CREW trail systems.”
CREW stands for the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed of southwest Florida.
“Like most moths, the black witch moth is most active at night, but due to their large size, you may still spot one during the day!” adds the CREW Land & Water Trust. “They roost in dark, protected spaces including in garages, under ledges, and even nestled in a cabbage palm like the one pictured here. Pretty neat!”
