Iguanas On The Brink Of Extinction Receive Their Own Dating Island

Conservationists are back at it again, saving the animals one species at a time. This time, they have decided to slowly rebuild the iguana population, and they did so in a creative way. These conservationists took iguanas that were on the brink of extinction and gave them their own dating island.

PEOPLE shared the incredible story of how conservationists are saving the Lesser Antillean iguana population. The outlet shared details from a release issued by Re:wild, a conservation nonprofit organization.

According to the organization, the conservationists began moving the Lesser Antillean iguanas back in 2016. Their efforts took the iguanas from the main island of Anguilla to “an uninhabited islet called Prickly Pear East.” The main reason for this move was that these iguanas were being outpaced by non-native species on the mainland.

This uninhabited island offered refuge from both the non-native iguana species and humans. Thus providing the Lesser Antillean iguanas with the peace to do the most important thing, procreate. Think of it as an Iguana Love Island.

Romance Is In The Air, And Populations Are Rising

As it turns out, iguanas like their privacy. Ten years after their initial move, the iguanas on the brink of extinction are blooming. Now that they have their own dating island, their population has increased substantially.

Now, conservationists are keeping the love flowing by continuously relocating eligible single iguanas over to the Prickly Pear East dating island. Additionally, the nonprofit reached out to the Forestry, Wildlife & Parks Division in Dominica and asked them for some young, Lesser Antillean iguanas.

They hoped that by adding these younglings to the dating island, they would increase the availability of healthy, young mates. Their idea proved to be fruitful. PEOPLE shared that ” With the addition of 10 iguanas to the original 23 that traveled to Prickly Pear East, a population of over 300 healthy Lesser Antillean iguanas has emerged.”
