“PSA: CHECK YOUR HELMETS!” advised the Maumelle Animal Shelter in a post sharing photos of a wild snake encounter in Arkansas. ABC News reported that a high school football player had been practicing for about an hour when he complained about a discomfort in his helmet. Turns out, a venomous cottonmouth snake had snuggled up inside the helmet’s padding.

To remove the snake, wildlife officials had to submerge the helmet, forcing the snake to come up for air. When it did, they were able to grab it and remove it safely. Thankfully, the snake hadn’t bitten the student.

“This is an important reminder that snakes and other critters can find their way into dark, enclosed spaces—especially helmets, shoes, bags, boxes, and other items that are left outside or sitting undisturbed,” Maumelle Animal Shelter wrote. “Before putting on your helmet, shoes, gloves, or any outdoor gear, always give it a quick check first. It only takes a few seconds and could prevent a very scary encounter—or worse.”
