A travel influencer recently shared footage of a lake the “floats” above the ocean, and his video has over 1.3 million views. I hadn’t heard about this place, but now it’s on my bucket list (along with all the other 1.3 million viewers’ bucket lists).

Lake Leitisvatn (also called Sørvágsvatn) is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands, which lie in the Atlantic Ocean between Scotland and Iceland. More specifically, this spectacular place is on Vágar Island, and the nearest town is Miðvágur. From there, there is a trailhead that leads to the floating lake that Chase Haubert has now made even more famous.

“The lore behind this cliff is crazier than the view,” wrote Haubert in his Instagram post sharing the video. Presumably, he is referring to local lore about The Slave Cliff, a shape-shifting mythological creature called the Nykur (or Nix), and the Hidden Folk (Huldufólk) who are said to live in these hills.
