PEOPLE Magazine shared the story of the bizarre encounter. A fisherman was about 11 miles off the coast of the village of Horning. He was rowing about on the River Bure, looking for a nice fish to catch. According to a Facebook post, the angler had just caught a fish when something unique and unexpected happened.

As the angler went to bring the fish aboard, the baby seal jumped out of the water and went after the same fish. As a result, both the fish and the baby seal ended up in the fisherman’s net. Rather than releasing the seal back into the water, the fisherman understood that the seal was far from home. The Facebook post shared that it was “18 kilometers or over a 5-hour walk from Sea Palling.” Therefore, the fisherman opted to alert Friends of Horsey.

The Rescue Team Arrives

Luckily, the rescue team arrived and began to handle the situation with care. The volunteer seal rescue team began taking the measurements and weights of the poor creature. The baby seal was 12kg, which the rescue confirmed was “significantly underweight.”

Due to its weight, the seal was transported to “RSPCA East Winch near Kings Lynn for further assessment and treatment.” Had this fisherman not saved this baby seal by keeping him in his net until the rescue team arrived, it likely would not have survived.

The rescue organization guesses that the seal did not come to this location by land. Rather, they predict that it possibly “swam up the river Bure from Great Yarmouth to land in Horning.” A truly impressive feat considering “the distance from Great Yarmouth to Horning by river is 20 miles.”
