The Ojai Raptor Center is currently caring for an injured bald eagle that’s drawing a lot of attention from the public. The eagle is affectionately called Jackie, and she’s one half of an internet-famous bonded pair of eagles that live in California’s Big Bear Valley. The Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) manages a live-streaming nest cam that keeps tabs on Jackie and her partner, Shadow, as well as their family. This year, their family unit includes eaglets Luna and Sandy.

On Friday, Jackie was apparently grounded (reason unknown) when two subadult bald eagles attacked her. Bystanders called for help and the Ojai Raptor Center responded, bringing the injured animal back to its rehabilitation center. The center says they’re awaiting test results to fully understand Jackie’s condition.

“Initial bloodwork indicates that the eagle is experiencing severe anemia and inflammation affecting the kidneys. We are still working to determine the underlying cause, and additional bloodwork and diagnostic test results are pending,” wrote the Ojai Raptor Center in its latest update on Instagram. “In the meantime, our veterinary team has begun supportive treatment based on the information available [. . .]. Her condition remains critical, and this is still a very serious case. While the patient remains alert and is eating, it is still too early to predict the outcome.”

For now, it’s a waiting game for Jackie’s thousands of fans. The public has outpoured financial support for the Ojai Raptor Center through a fundraising page.
