Camping Escape to an Island in Winter

If you think islands are just for summer, think again! Winter transforms these beautiful gems into peaceful, endless wonderlands for campervan getaways. Whether you’re a seasoned winter camper or just curious about off-season escapes, join Susan as she takes you through her recent trip to Kangaroo Island, winter camping highlights and her Achtung Camper experience. Enjoy.

Favourite Places

Since Susan purchased her van in 2016, she has been lucky enough to make the most of travelling on the road! She has travelled more than 160,000kms across, around, down and up our awesome country including some island camping in winter.

Despite not having a favourite spot, Susan enjoys each destination as every destination has its own adventure and it’s hard to beat her home, Point Lonsdale.

She has enjoyed travelling in her van as it has given her one of her best experiences which was travelling solo. Susan explored to the tip of Cape York last year along with her border collie, Buddy.

Recent Trips

Susan recently travelled to Kangaroo Island in which she explores her amazing trip with her son.

Travelling alongside someone for Susan’s island camping in winter, meant that Susan could stay in one place and settle for a couple of days, so she was able to make the most of each location that she visited.

Susan’s friend has a camper trailer and we base camped at Kingscote and used his 4WD to explore. We have two dogs so were unable to venture into the national park but Kangaroo Island had a lot of beaches and walks to enjoy. Being on an island also meant that there was peace and serenity with hardly any tourists. However, many cafes and shops were closed but depending on your travel style, and for Susan this wasn’t an issue! Susan loves winter travel and says it is perfect if you like to avoid crowds. Own a nice raincoat and enjoy walking and exploring.

The worst part of the trip also became a bit of an adventure for Susan when the winter weather showed its true colours. When a massive cold front hit the Kangaroo Island, and to avoid being stuck in the weather on the Island for two days, catching the ferry before it was cancelled was the last option. It was a horrible trip in severe seas and sorely tested our sea legs. Most passengers were seasick and I don’t know what our dogs thought alone in the van. We drove in the dark with a raging storm to Victor Harbour where, in her Achtung Camper was able to be sheltered from the worst weather.

Why Winter Camping?

Campervan Getaway
Susan loves winter camping because you never know what the weather could be and as you can still get nice days where “you can be lucky and get cold but sunny days, perfect for walking and exploring”.

Enjoy cooking when camping with winter enabling you to treasure those warm home cooked meals, especially when the days are short. Susan recommends any pasta meal as it is easy and filling, and says you can’t go past a good curry. Within your Achtung Camper, the ability to have a little fridge is a great option as Susan loves that it holds plenty of food and she enjoys restocking in small towns when travelling!

Travelling with a mid top van, Susan says she loves it as it means her ceiling does not pop up but is well insulated. When travelling in winter she is “never cold and the van is a cosy retreat”. Susan loves he best part about my van is that everything is easy, easy to drive, simple to set up, quick to move on and plenty of space for Buddy and me.
