A wolf had become somewhat of a celebrity in South Korea, although not for the best reasons. Rather than being loved for its majestic howl, this escaped wolf was known because it miraculously managed to escape the zoo it called home. Fortunately, after an intensive nine-day search, which left everyone on edge, the wolf was safely returned to the zoo.

CNN shared some details regarding this animal’s escape. The outlet shared that the escaped wolf was a male named Neukgu. The animal managed to escape by burrowing out of its enclosure at the O-World zoo in Daejeon. Naturally, keepers were surprised to find him missing, and once the public knew, panic ensued.
Some individuals were fearful for themselves. After all, what would you do if you saw a wolf walking around in public? However, others were more concerned for the wolf’s safety. CNN shared that “Animal rights activists questioned whether the wolf could survive outside the zoo.” It is true that occasionally, once animals become domesticated, they can struggle to survive in the wild — particularly in urban settings.
Additionally, they feared that the wolf might be harmed or killed during capture efforts. Their fears were not entirely invalid, as the outlet shared that a puma met that unfortunate fate after it escaped from this same zoo back in 2018.
The Escape Wolf Is Safely Returned To The Zoo
After hearing the public’s concern over the escaped wolf, President Lee Jae Myung assured the public that they were doing everything they could to capture the wolf alive. Additionally, he shared that there were “89 police, fire officials, and the military” working on the job.
However, the wolf did not make their jobs easy. There were several spottings and almost captures during the nine-day search. At one point, authorities almost captured Neukgu, but he managed to evade them. Similarly, locals spotted the wolf as well. One driver took a cideo of him “trotting along a dark mountain road.”
Eventually, authorities found and tranquilized the escaped wolf. CNN shares that the captured occured “on a hill near an expressway.” After he was tranquilized, he was safely returned to the zoo and assessed by professionals. They claim that the wolf is in stable condition.
