SHANE & JAN’S ACHTUNG CAMPER CAMPERVAN EXPERIENCE

Shane and Jan from Victoria know exactly what their Achtung Camper is built for: getting out there and making the most of the journey.

In a year of travelling on their VW 4Motion Transporter, they’ve clocked up an impressive 34,000 kilometres, exploring some of Australia’s most iconic roads. F

rom crossing the Nullarbor on annual family trips to Perth, to tackling the Great Central Road from Kalgoorlie to Uluru, their van has become the perfect companion for long-haul or spontaneous adventures. They’ve also explored Queensland’s Dinosaur Trail through Winton, Hughenden and Richmond, plus a two-week lap of Tasmania.

It’s clear that Achtung vans are built to make memories. 

SHANE & JAN’S FAVOURITE FEATURES

One thing Shane and Jan love the most is the practicality of their setup. Like many Achtung Campervan owners, they’ve wanted something compact enough for everyday driving while still being comfortable for extended touring. Their VW Transporter ticks all these boxes. It’s easy to drive around town, fits into most carparks, yet is still packed with functionality for life on the road.  

Inside, the flexible seating and sleeping layout has been their standout. The swivel passenger seat and rear bench create a comfortable living space, while the roof bed means the van can easily accommodate family adventures too. Being able to carry passengers in the back has proven valuable for day trips and travelling with the grandkids.

They’ve also embraced the simplicity of off-grid travel. With solar panels, an inverter and induction cooking setup, Shane and Jan rarely need powered sites. Their battery system comfortably handles everything from the induction cooker to a low-wattage toaster and electric jug. Shane and Jan are a reminder that modern campervan travel can be both simple and self-sufficient.

Importantly, they noted that they skipped out on some features, such as the hot water feature. However, they noted this has been fine for their travel style. They did note if you’re someone who was an ocean swimmer, for example, then it might be worthwhile. That’s what custom campervan designs are all about: building a van that works for your adventures.

Shane and Jan’s verdict is simple: “Overall very happy with our van.” And with plenty more kilometres ahead, we’d say their Achtung Camper is only just getting started.
