ACHTUNG ADVENTURES: RETIRED LIFE HAS NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD

Retired life has never looked so good, according to Achtung Camper owner, Wendy Bomford and her partner. For the past two and a half years they have been travelling the country on and off in their converted Volkswagen Transporter Campervan.

To date, the couple have ventured from Cairns to Sunshine Coast, into northern New South Wales and through outback Queensland.

FAVOURITE VAN FEATURES

Wendy adores many features in her campervan. “The most useful features are the pop-top and awning. We would not be without either,” she says. Also at the top of her list are the:

    • Sirocco fan
    • Insect screens
    • Natural cabinetry
    • Easy parking
    • 4Motion

Another of Wendy’s favourite van features is the natural plywood that has paired well with her bright orange interior. “Being able to choose and personalise our van with our own colour scheme was a major draw card to Achtung Camper,” says Wendy.

The convenience of driving and parking in cities, without the stress of fitting into tight spaces, is another highlight.

With the 4Motion, they feel confident driving to more remote spots, such as cattle stations, beaches, and farms. The quick and easy set-up is a major bonus, as well as the off-grid electrical system, powered by solar panels and an inverter that runs the fridge effortlessly, adding to the ease of their travels.

FAVOURITE CAMPING MEAL

Souvlaki lamb backstrap cooked on the open fire then wrapped in pita bread with feta, olives, rocket and cherry tomatoes.

RECENT TRIPS

Recently, Wendy embarked on a six-week trip taking in Quilpie and Windorah in Queensland, then onto Hawks Nest in New South Wales. They made it as far south as Geelong while it was warm for camping, and explored the coastal areas of South Australia. At the time of writing this blog, Wendy and her partner were looking forward to three days at Bellwether Wines in South Australia. “Our days will be full of exploring the Limestone Coast, relaxing and wine tasting,” says Wendy.

Smaller trips include heading to a few of their favourite inland cattle stations for four or five nights of off-grid camping. They manage to schedule one of these holidays in every few weeks.

BEST SPOTS WITH A DOG

QLD:

  • Charlotte Plains
  • Woodleigh Cattle Station
  • Lara Wetlands
  • Dam Crazy Campground

NSW:

  • Corindi
  • Red Rock
  • Mystery Bay
  • Bendalong

VIC:

  • Cape Conran
  • Mallacoota
  • Geelong

BEST EXPERIENCES

  • Watching the sunset in outback Queensland
  • Cooking on the campfire (folding fire pit) while drinking a red wine
  • Early morning sunrises on the beaches in New South Wales while walking their dog, Frankie

Despite three chipped windscreens travelling the Bruce Highway to Cairns and more recently dropping the outlet from the porta potti down the dump point, there has not been any negatives with life in a campervan.

WENDY’S TOP CAMPERVAN TIPS

  1. Avoid travelling after 4pm, especially in the outback
  2. Avoid travel during school holidays, Easter time or public holidays
  3. If you need to smash out some clothes washing, it’s not such a bad idea to book a cabin or Airbnb for one or two nights

Buying an Achtung Camper Campervan is the “best decision we ever made”, declares Wendy.
