Have you seen Grood the motorhome cruisin’ the open roads?
Clearly, there’s a story behind the name Grood. It comes from the owners pet Groodle, Murphy. Murphy is a School Wellbeing Dog who loves to spend his weekends and school holidays out exploring, just like their motorhome.
“Our wonderful Achtung Crafter is called Grood,” says Nigel Vernon owner of Grood. “Grood even has its own Instagram page for people to follow along.
“Murphy makes a regular appearance as well.”
Grood’s first big trip was a 5,000km adventure through both New South Wales and Queensland that covered inland and coastline. Additionally, weekend trips are a common occurrence for Grood.
Top Three Travel Tips

Nigel’s Favourite Moments
Location
Nigel loves the north coast of New South Wales. It is a goldmine of natural wonders. He loves exploring the small country and seaside towns as they boast excellent hospitality, and locally crafted food and beverages.
Memories
Sunrises and sunsets at free camp locations are high on Nigel’s list of memories.
“The most memorable trip was the first getaway in Grood to Brewery Flat Reserve in Narrandera. It was our first big trip in our self-contained motorhome, and everything worked perfectly,” says Nigel.
With all trip comes the good and the good and the bad. Nigel describes one of his best experiences thus far is having the confidence to drive long stretches of country and outback gravel roads and climbing through the winding roads of hinterlands and rainforests.
However, his not so favourite experience was checking-in late to a caravan park as he much prefers free camping. This is because they were tightly sandwiched between two cabins in a densely populated park which is not their idea of camping… And not ours either!
Meals
Thanks to the freezer in the motorhome, Nigel will pre-cook one of his favourite meals, chicken tikka curry to easily heat up after a day of exploring. He also suggests a trip to the local butcher for sausages or preferred meats for an easy dinner. Paired with a selection of fresh vegetables makes for a handy one-pot meal using the van’s diesel cooktop.
Favourite Features
Nigel touches on Grood being a very thoughtful build by the Achtung Camper team. He recognises that we are passionate for camping and tried and tested all aspects of each build.
- Bed: It is very comfortable and spacious. And Murphy thinks so too. There is nothing we would change!
- Drawer fridge: The optional addition is an excellent way of keeping drinks cold and easily accessible.
- Power: Very impressive amount of power on board.
- Large water storage: The only reason to return to civilisation would be to top- up with water after quite a number of days living off-grid.
Big thanks to Nigel for taking the time to answer a few questions for this blog. Next on the cards is a road trip to Tassie, and another across to South Australia.
