Ollie Bergquist has just completed something special. He set off from the California coast as a 17 year old, sailed solo across the Pacific Ocean, and docked in Hawaii as an 18 year old after celebrating his birthday at sea. The solo sail from California to Hawaii wasn’t easy, but he persevered and accomplished something he’d been dreaming of and working toward for years.

“What a feeling,” Bergquist wrote in a celebratory Instagram post after he set foot on Hawaii soil after 20 days at sea. “It’s been one hell of a road to get here. [. . .] From working every summer since the age of 13 at a woodyard and dreaming of sailing around the world. I would come home completely beat and I would still study almost every day about sailing. This has been the most challenging and difficult year of my life, but also the most rewarding.”
In an interview with local news, Bergquist says he considered turning back after suffering from seasickness early on in his journey. Thankfully, he gained his sea legs and began fishing to catch his own meals.
